FED: Thousands of jobs threatened by paper dumping AMWU

SYDNEY, April 1 AAP - About 15,000 jobs in regional Australia were under threat by an
Indonesian company's application to remove strict anti-dumping measures from its exports to
Australia, a production union said today.

The threat to jobs in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales was from Tjiwi Kiamia (Tjiwi
Kiamia), a subsidiary of Asia Pulp and Paper, Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union printing
division national secretary Michael Brown said.

"Hundreds of Australian workers lost their jobs as a result of this Indonesia company
dumping its product here before," Mr Brown said in a statement.

"They were found guilty then and have continued to dump in other countries since."

Mr Brown said the Australian Customs Service had been conducting an inquiry into an
application by the Indonesian company to revoking measures which were first imposed in 1994.

He called on Customs Minister Amanda Vanstone to ensure Customs properly assessed the
impact of the economic crisis in Indonesia on that country's sale of paper.

"Senator Vanstone now has the fate of thousands of workers and their families in regional
centres like Maryvale, Burnie and Shoalhaven in her hands," Mr Brown said.
